Small wooden home is nicer to live in than a giant stone construction just because of the materials and scale alone. I would argue that some of the middle class homes from Dickens era, were more cozy and comfortable than some of the more fabulous buildings. If they were built for the wealthy they were built to show off that wealth not necessarily make the people that lived there more comfortable than modern humans can live. So many were built to be either fortresses or displays of grandeur-which is the opposite of comfort. But as others mention, they are nothing but money sinks and even the best designed can still be really uncomfortable and unpleasant to actually live in, sadly. If I was someone like ridiculously wealthy I would totally buy a castle or some other historic building. There are certainly historic places that are way more comfortable than others but but generally speaking technology technology and comfort have improved so much since ye olden days that it really is noticeably different as far as actually being able to live there goes. The palatial type residences can be pretty comfortable, especially if you are there at the right season, but actually living in one of those buildings is a fucking nightmare, compared to modern comforts. Cool and beautiful, but not places I would love to be in all the time, even if you could add electricity and heat and running water. The ones that are maintained are still dreadfully cold or otherwise uncomfortable.
